Abaco Attractions and Activities

The following are just a few of our editor's top picks of attractions and activities in Abaco.

Abaco National Park
Abaco National Park is located in southern Abaco, not far from the Hole in the Wall. The Bahamas National Trust is responsible for managing the more than 20,000 acre park. Many people are drawn to the park to observe the rare Bahamian parrots in their natural habitat. The Abaco National Park was founded in 1994. There are a variety of distinct areas in the park, including pine forests, sand dunes, wetlands, and regions with beautiful mangrove trees. Ranger tours can be arranged to tour the park’s protected regions.

Caribbean vacationers are always within close proximity to a beach. As a result, tourists can select from secluded beaches on private islands or public beaches with numerous activities. Beaches with a lot of activity include the section of beach on the Abaco Beach Resort’s property and Treasure Cay’s Ocean Beach. Those seeking seclusion can visit Tahiti Beach, which can only be reached after a hike or bike ride. A beach on Cocoa Bay is another great location for those seeking privacy. This beach is near the Green Turtle Club.

The waters near the Out Islands are one of the premier fishing spots in the world. Inexperienced and professional fishers enjoy bonefishing and deep sea fishing in these waters. These waters are also full of yellow fin tuna, grouper, snapper, and marlin. Fishing tournaments are sponsored at Green Turtle Cay, Treasure Cay, Marsh Harbour, and Walker’s Cay each summer. Tourists interested in chartering a fishing boat can contact their hotel’s concierge desk or the Sea Gull Cottages located in Hopetown.

Scuba Diving
The waters surrounding Abaco are ideal for scuba diving since they are full of beautiful coral reefs, sea life, and large quantities of tropical fish. Tourists interested in renting or buying equipment, hiring diving tour guides, or taking dive lessons can contact any of the following dive shops: Dive Abaco (800-247-5338), Brendal’s Dive Center (242-365-4411), or Abaco Dive Adventures (242-367-2963).

Albury Brothers Boat Builders
Tourists interested in witnessing boats being constructed should visit the Albury Brothers Boat Builders on Man-O-War Cay. For many years, boats have been built at this shop. The owners’ of this family-run shop design and construct boats that exemplify the distinctive connection between island natives and the Caribbean Sea.
